Autumn 2017 - Scafell Hotel, Borrowdale

November 2 2017 (Day One): The Coledale Round

Brian, John, Steve W, Charles and George had arrived on the Wednesday evening. There was an excellent forecast for Thursday and we set off in the cars to Braithwaite, parking near the Coledale Inn. From there we walked south close to the Buttermere Road until we reached Stoneycroft, where we turned right for the steep ascent of Causey Pike (morale more or less unaffected by a bloke with his 5 year old son who seemed to be climbing at about the same pace as us). After a coffee break on Causey Pike we walked on to Sail and the zigzag path up Crag Hill, taking the extension of the Round on to Grasmoor where we had lunch with spectacular views west over the sea and north to Scotland.

After lunch, in what had become perfect weather, we went on to Sand Hill, Hopegill Head and Grisedale Pike, by which time the light was fading for the long descent down to Braithwaite, which we completed in the dark before heading into the pub for a swift one before heading back to Borrowdale.

Distance walked about 12 miles with 4700 feet of climbing (route on the map in blue).
